Fermenting grapes without additional components is producing an alcoholic beverage called wine.
There are several types of wines, basically different grapes will end to a different wine. Adding sugar, water, alcohol and/or yeasts will produce different wines as well. Also different geographical regions and different climes will create variations of the end product.
The word is based on a Latin word, Vinum. It has been produced for thousands of years, it is said that 8,000 years is an accurate number.
There are beverages also called wines that are produced from other fruits, like apples, plumbes, cherries and more. In certain places, like in Japan, wine is produced from fermenting rice. It is called Sake.
